We bought airplane tickets to Arica (Chile), rented a truck, loaded it with two weeks worth of food, water, and fuel, drove to Putre, and explored North Chile, mostly the area around Parque Nacional Lauca and Reserva Natural Vicunas.  Maybe someday I will find some time to write up a more detailed trip report.
